The parts that fail are mostly the same few: extension springs, rollers, cables, tracks and the opener. Catching one early usually keeps the repair small.

The problems we see most often

Broken extension springs, worn rollers, and cables that have frayed or come off the drum make up most of our repair work. When an extension spring breaks, the door goes out of balance and the opener strains to lift weight it was never meant to carry. Worn rollers make the door grind and shudder through its travel. A damaged cable is the one to act on fast, because a door that drops or binds hard can bend the track or panels around it.

An opener that won't respond or runs roughly is another common call. Opener repair typically runs $70 to $275. A damaged sectional panel typically runs $275 to $850 to replace, depending on the material and size. Tell us the panel material and size when you call and we'll place you within those ranges, then set the exact number once we've seen the door.

Tracks get bent or knocked out of alignment when something bumps them or the door is forced. If the door binds on one side or jumps the track, we realign the track or replace the damaged section.

When you are ready, garage door opener repair is the place to start. Searching for garage door repair in Kokomo? See our home page.

What the symptoms mean

Grinding usually means bad rollers or a track that needs work. A door that feels heavy when you lift it by hand points to a spring or cable problem. Stop forcing it at that point, because a loaded spring or a loose cable can hurt you or the door.

Hard winter freezes here put stress on slabs, so a door that starts binding or sits unevenly after a cold stretch gets its tracks checked first. We also look at how the door meets the floor.

A gap along the sides or bottom usually means the seal is worn out, or the door has dropped slightly because a spring or cable is going. We tell you which it is before you spend anything on the fix.

Permits and the opening

Replacing panels, springs, rollers or cables is repair work on the door itself. Changing the garage door opening or the structure that supports it is different. Kokomo treats structural modifications as building-permit work, so that kind of job needs a call to the city before anyone cuts into framing.

The code in force in Indiana is the 2020 Indiana Residential Code, based on the 2018 International Residential Code with Indiana amendments. A like-for-like parts swap stays on the repair side of that line. Once a job goes past that and touches the opening or its supporting structure, the permit decision belongs to the city.

Repair or replace

When a car or a branch has damaged only one panel and the remaining sections are straight and sound, we swap just that panel. We don't sell a new door when a single section will do.

The call changes when the damage is spread across several panels and the opener is also failing. At that point we tell you so, and we show you what is worn before you decide.

If you live near Wildcat Creek and the water came up in the April flood, check the bottom panel, the opener and the floor edge for water damage once it recedes. We look at those on the visit too.

What we do when we come out

We run the door through a full cycle to hear and see where it binds or roughs up. Then we inspect the rollers and how they move in the tracks, check cable tension, and look at the spring. That tells us whether it's a quick fix or whether several things are worth doing in one visit.

When we replace a cable or a roller, we cycle the door again afterward to confirm it moves smoothly. To get a time on the calendar, book online and we'll come out and go through it with you.
