They tell the opener to reverse if something breaks the beam on the way down. When they fail, the door won't close or keeps reversing. We find out whether the wire or the sensors are at fault, then replace the part that failed.
What a failed sensor looks like
Each sensor has a light, and both should come on when the system is working. If one or both stay dark, the opener can't confirm the space under the door is clear. It reads the open circuit as an obstruction, so the door reverses or won't come down when you press the button.
Two things cause that: a faulty sensor, or damage somewhere along the wire running from a sensor back to the opener. The symptoms look the same from the driveway, so we don't guess which one it is.

How we find the real fault
First we read the lights on both sensors and follow the wire run looking for damage. If the fault is still there, we test the sensors with a temporary direct wiring connection. If both lights come on, the wire run is bad and gets replaced. If they don't, the sensors are bad and we replace them.
That test is why you don't end up buying a pair of sensors when the real problem is a damaged wire, or the other way around.

What the repair involves
We replace the damaged wiring or the faulty sensors and match your opener's existing wiring configuration, so everything goes back the way the opener expects. The tools are simple: a Phillips screwdriver and wire strippers.
If the sensors turn out to be fine and the trouble is somewhere else, we tell you that before any work starts.
What it costs
Sensor wiring replacement typically runs $70 to $275 and that is the range we quote when you call. Whether the wire or the sensors failed moves the final figure, so we settle the exact price once we've looked at your door and before any repair begins.
Permits and creek-side homes
Kokomo lists structural modifications as building-permit work, so changing a garage-door opening or its supporting structure means checking with the city first. Swapping sensors or sensor wiring doesn't change the opening.
If your home is near Wildcat Creek, the April flood affected nearly 400 homes in Howard County. After high water, look around the garage for water damage. If the sensors quit working after a flood, tell us when we arrive so we can check them along with the wiring.
